Guten Tag!
My name is Eva Hoeckner.
I was born and raised in Germany and hold a Master's degree in German, Latin, and Educational Psychology from Bonn University. I joined the LFC in 2004 after teaching in public and private schools in Chicago and at the Goethe Institute.
The German program at the LFC adheres to the guidelines of the French Ministry of Education. I have created a curriculum for my students that combines the most current teaching material from Germany and France with new techniques and ideas from workshops which I regularly attend at the Goethe Institute and through language teaching associations. German is my language of communication with the students during class and outside of class from the very beginning in 6th grade. Academic learning is enriched through experiences of German culture in Chicago (Lyric Opera, German speaking operas in student matinee performances), and activities such as High School language contests at the University of Illinois at Chicago (Click "Aktuelles" to see photos). In all my classes I focus on teaching my students organizational skills, good study habits, and time management. Students who need more support or advance at a faster pace, receive individual attention throughout the year according to their needs.
Furthermore, students in 9th/10th grade participate in an exchange program with a German High School in Munich. LFC-students are hosted in German families and spend their days in school or on field trips to the city and the surrounding area. (For photos click the link "Munich Exchange" on the top.) A trip in October to Munich is paired with a visit from our host students here in Chicago in the Spring of the same year.
In addition to this class exchange, I encourage students to spend a trimester at our partner school for an in-depth experience of study abroad.
In Grades 11 and 12 students can qualify for the Dual-Credit program through Loyola University. The German class counts as German 103/104 towards college credit at Loyola or other institutions.
All my students have been extremely successful so far in the BAC and in many pursue German at Oxford University, McGill University, New York University, Wharton School of Business, University of California at Santa Barbara, and Columbia/Science Po among others.
