Summer camps in Germany
Dear parents of German students at the Lycée,
Every year, I encourage our German students to consider spending part of the summer in Germany in a language camp in order to practice and enrich his/her German skills and to experience the culture first hand. Students who went in the past have shown significant improvement in all areas and took a much more active role in their continued learning. Here are three suggestions starting with my preferred option and concluding with a camp in the U.S.
1) Goethe Institute
These Camps provide high quality teaching to students from all over the world (starting at age 9 through High School). Students are grouped by age and within their age group by skill level. They stay in youth houses with their group leaders. The classes are enriched with cultural programs and trips. The Goethe camps have locations throughout Germany. Some camps offer additional emphasis on sports (soccer) or music. The Goethe Institute administers testing at the end of the course which is acknowledged worldwide for professional and educational certification. You can apply online or through the Goethe Institute here in Chicago (150 N. Michigan Ave, Tel: (312) 263-0472).

2) DID-Deutsch-Institut
This camp is similar to the Goethe Institute camp but has shorter or longer stays in six locations in Germany and one in Austria.

3) GLS
This camp offers two popular locations (Berlin, Munich) and many options with additional sports concentration, e.g. sailing, horseback riding, tennis, and soccer. Each age group is housed in a different location and has age specific activities. Scheduling is flexible, you pick the time and number of weeks.
