December: Excursion to the Christkindl Market
Students in 6th and 7th grade German enjoyed a day at the Christkindl Market in downtown Chicago. Vendors from Germany and other countries sell candy, food, ornaments and many other gifts in original wooden booths imported from Nuremberg. The students had a list of questions they had to answer by speaking German to the vendors. Afterwards, they sampled Bratwurst with Sauerkraut, potato pancakes or Brezel. Frohe Weihnachten!

February 2019: Bauhaus Workshop
In order to celebrate 100 years of Bauhaus, the influential design school of Dessau, Germany, the Goethe Institute and the Museum of Design in Frankfurt organized a workshop at the LFC. After a theoretical part, students in High school and in Elementary School were asked to build a chair with just five basic craft supplies and in 10 minutes time.

Students in 6th-8th grade visit the German Christkindlmarket in downtown Chicago each December to enjoy German Christmas traditions, food, and festivities. They speak German to the vendors and answer questions in a scavenger hunt.

March: UIC German High School Day
Every year, high school students compete and win prizes
in various categories with other High School students
in the Chicago area: poetry recitation, essay writing, skits etc.

March 2013: The new German film "Hannah Arendt"
German students attended a special pre-screening at the Gene Siskel Film Center which was sponsored by the Goethe Institute. The political theorist and philosopher Hannah Arendt (1906-1975) and her writings are part of the curriculum of German as well as History and Philosophy in 11th and 12th grade at the LFC.
