Skills and evaluation process:
  • ​Three modes of communication: interpersonal, interpretive, presentational
  • Emphasis on comprehension, comprehensibility, vocabulary usage, language control, communication strategies, cultural awareness.
  • Holistic approach: Learn language structures in context and use them to convey meaning with a focus on function and the communicative task without overemphasizing grammatical accuracy.
  • Develop awareness and appreciation of products (tangible like books, music; intangible like conventions, institutions), practices (social interaction), perspectives (values, attitudes) in contemporary and historical contexts.
  • Multiple Choice: only correct answers count. No deduction for incorrect answers.
  • Directions in the exam booklet are printed in English and German but student must respond in German.
  • No dictionary allowed.

Structure of Exam

Section I: Multiple Choice  (Reading and Listening)

Section II: Free-Response (Writing and Speaking) 
(Interpersonal and presentational communication)
  • read and reply to an e-mail message

      (article + table/graph + audio)  40 min. writing
  • respond orally to questions in simulated conversation
  • make a 2-minute-presentation in response to a prompt
